5) Lil' Wayne- A Millie
"Steppin' out of the Lamborghini, hoping these crackers see me, like, 'look at this rascal Weezy'. He's a beast. He's a dog. He's a mother fucking problem. Okay, your a goon, but what's a goon to a goblin?" This might be the most remixed song in history, and could very well be the street anthem of the millennium. Obviously, the beat is incredibly repetitive, but there is something about it that allows the emcee to do whatever they want. Any flow, any topic, any voice; everything goes perfectly. Even Roscoe P Coldchain could ride this beat. (Reference only intended for the nerdiest of hip hop heads.) Weezy might not be the best rapper alive, but he is pretty close. On a Millie, dude is a fucking monster. Three verses, ripped to smithereens with abstract free word association, silly punchlines, and ridiculous rhyme schemes. This song doesn't escape your head, and has been on heavy rotation in every club for the last six months. I love TI, and Jeezy and Kanye do their thing, but in 2008, Weezy was the king of hip hop.
4) Sebastien Tellier- Divine
I have written a lot about Sebastien Tellier this year. Here is a cool thing I said, "Last year, Daft Punk's Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo took on a new venture as the executive producer of Sebastien Tellier's last album Sexualité. Born in Paris in 1975, Tellier evolved out of the Daft Punk/ Air school. His first release, L'incroyable Vérité, or The Incredible Truth, came out in 2001. Since, he's toured with Air, dropped his second studio album Politics, represented France in the Eurovision song contest, probably done lots of drugs, had sex with lots of beautiful French women, and of course, earlier this year, put out Sexualité- an eleven track musical achievement. It has the same effortless hipness and mood as late Marvin Gaye, it aphrodizes like Sade, and yet, Homem-Christo never lets you forget who he is. I saw Tellier a month or so ago, and I, along with the crowd in its entirety, was captured by his rockstar. On stage he is the hundred-foot tall, out of shape, incredibly hairy yet unmistakably balding, epitome of every French, quasi-nihilistic, superstar quality that you might conjure in your head."
I think Sexualité was my favourite album of the year, and Divine was Tellier's adorably cheesy, smart, sophisticated, and retro-synthed out single. The video is also pretty amazing.
roscoe p coldchain has the worst flow in the history of flows and would somehow manage to fuck up a millie. why do the clipse co-sign dude?
