The You Wildin' Top Sixty Songs of 2008: 3,2

3) Lykke Li- Little Bit
When my good friend Hima ranked this song as the tenth best of the year on Gordon Gartrelle, he said, "What can I say about this song that hasn't been said about Empanadas? It's fucking awesome." I feel dude. It is difficult to talk about this song, but I will give it a go.
The minimalist production aligns with perfectly toned and heavily delayed vocals to create a grandiose forum for Li's primal and poetic lyrics. "For you I keep my legs apart, and forget about my tainted heart."
I hear this song and see the gray light of an early morning after an incredible night out. I am reminded of the feeling of excitement one gets when they are falling in love. Wow, gay. Anyway, Lykke Li's album Youth Novels is impeccable, and the singer herself might be my most preferred person in the world right now.

2) MGMT- Electric Feel
I have mentioned the change that characterized music in 2008 a few times. However, there has been so much good indie rock that has come out in this millennium that it is harder to credit MGMT (pronounced Management, not M-G-M-T) for being groundbreaking. Granted, they are the the first in a small school of elecro-psychedelic-funk/r&b L train rock bands (only two dudes, technically the smallest band you can have). But if these Wesleyan graduates showcase any change, it is in mass media's new-found tolerance for the strange, for the ripe ability for artists to hardly compromise their taste and integrity in order to be on MTV. Because in 2005, these two hipster weirdos would not be on MTV.
Furthermore, MGMT is a great band. Oracular Spectacular is a quality album. And Electric Feel rocks my socks off- pretty cool tropical lyrics, great vocal effects and layering in the chorus, nice use of vintage instrumentation, etc. See you tomorrow for numero uno, and a playlist of my twenty favourite pregame songs of the year!
