Apparently, before Manhattan was the megapolis we know and love, it was a remarkable and diverse ecosystem. The Mannahatta Project has created an interactive map which simulates what Manhattan looked like in 1609, before it was "discovered" by Henry Hudson and settled by the white devils. You can then compare what any spot on the island presently looks like, with its natural, pre-European state. Check it out here.

this was pretty cool, but kinda super-long at 2 hours (the tv show on, I think, the history channel?). Mad of the city is literally made of garbage, which is awesome and something I never knew, but also kind of always knew.
