YW's Fifty Greatest Rappers of All TIme: Interesting Stats

Top ten will be revealed two per day next week. For now lets explore some interesting trends.

*Rappers within groups and the groups as whole were both considered when gathering statistics. Pac is considered west coast, Ricky D is considered a New Yorker.

Geographic:
Entries on the list from NYC: 23
From the Tri-State Area: 33
From ATL: 6
From the South: 8
From Chicago: 3
From the Midwest: 4
From the West Coast: 3
From Philly: 2

Age:
Dead Rappers: 4 13/36th (RIP ODB and Freaky Tah)
Rappers under 30: 6
Between 30-40: 30
40 and above: 10

Other:
Percent of list that is male: 98
Percent of list that is American: 99ish (Slick Rick was born in England but raised in New York, and I think some one else was as well but I can't remember who.)

Didn't Quite Make it:
51) Jay Dilla
52) Kid Cudi
53) Kool Moe Dee
54) Mash Out Posse (MOP)
55) KRS One* (I think we are bad people for this one.)
56) Missy Elliot
57) Gangstarr/ Guru
58) Elzhi
59) Big Daddy Kane
60) Mad Lib

Lowest overall averages:
While there were five emcees that had an average between 3.5 and 4 (Black Rob, 8Ball and MJG, Atmosphere/ Slugg, Lil' Flip, and Ray Cash), the undisputed worst rapper rated was the dude from Lincoln Park aka Mike Shinoda (or something) with an average of 2.88. In all fairness, I left a lot of rappers out of the nomination pool who I didn't think had a shot at making it to the top fifty. So while we can not definitively say that the dude from Lincoln Park is the worst rapper to ever become famous for rapping (excludes athletes, Joaquim Pheonix and Kevin Federline), the argument can be made. The guy did have a big part in developing Lupe as an artist, so props for that. But in general, stay inside your fort, miner.

Dissapointing Finishes:
*The number you see is the Average Score
96) Juvenile- 5.1
It's all good, he's finna bounce back.
93) David Banner- 5.2
Despite the Indian judges ten (payolla maybe?).
91) Immortal Technique- 5.21
Maybe if he wasn't such a dismissive dick to teenage fans when they earnestly offered their praise, they wouldn't still hate you six years later.
90) Nelly- 5.25
Come on dudes. Nelly is a hit making machine. And if you can honestly say that there is not some part of you that secretly feels that song with Tim McGraw, you aren't a trustworthy person.
Tied 86) 3 6 Mafia- 5.4
A few of the judges don't like disabled people and discriminated against 3 6 cuz DJ Paul has a baby arm. Dicks.
81) Swizz Beats (or is it Swiss Beatz, I can't remember)- 5.58
Gotta give the dude credit for staying relevant, and being the only producer/rapper in history that is part Tucan.
78) The Game- 5.6
I fucks with the Game. No Homeo.
74) Dead Prez- 5.78
If you gave DP below a six, Fred Hampton is gonna haunt you from the grave.
73) Peedi Crakk- 5.79
Yo for real, listen to dude again. He is nasty.
69) LL Cool J- 5.93
He's a republican, so fuck him. Although Deep Blue Sea was the jump off.
61) Juelz Santana- 6.2
Ay! Dipset all day.

Come back later for zee pregame playlist, it's gonna be awesome.

Yo fuck LL.

I am sad that you have confirmed what I have heard about Technique. I really love that dude's music (and anger), but you can't act like that towards your supporters. Other rappers, like Weezy, Jeezy, Jay, do it subliminally, not outright and to their face.

Dead Prez is one of those groups where, you appreciate their realness and the relevance of their message, but M-1 is horrible. Their best song, "Hip-Hop," he is offbeat the entire time. "Mind Sex" has a sick beat, but I listened to it again the other day, and the lyrics are so cheesy. I think I gave them a 7, but its kind of like how life-long Yankee fans say Jeter is the best Shortstop in the league: it's based more on appreciation than actual merit.

Swizz Beatz: amazing producer, horrible rapper. If this was based on just producers, him, Dre, Kanye, Banner would have all been much higher.

I fux with Peedi, he is nasty and a thug.

I'm happy that Cudi did not make the list. Having ONE hit song, does NOT qualify you to be on this list kiddo. Sorry.

I love the interesting tid bits. Also, very funny. Favorite line: "But in general, stay inside your fort, miner." Not only is that Linkin Park guy a huge douche, he also doesn't know how to spell Lincoln.

PS- Where was Jeezy on our list?

juvee got hosed man. think that people who have locked up the rap game for a certain time (1998-99 in terms manny fresh and them) definitely deserve higher. oh well.

Though my East Coast bias towards rap is rampant. I must say the sample size is heavily flawed. I'll site the three biggest flawed demographics; region (almost entirely Northeast), age (if someone over 30 voted holler), and of course diversity (don't even need to explain that one). Not hating, just pointing out that our sample size as a whole is flawed. Apparently, Northeastern born, mid 20's, white males all think alike...Long Live conformity! I'm just going to go buy some tight jeans, cop a flannel, grow out an ironic mustachio, and move to Greenpoint..see you there..

and that's why its entitled YW'S fifty greatest rappers of all time as opposed to THE fifty greatest rappers of all time, because it is a reflection of our very specific demographic's opinion.

I considered hollering at older cats, and the several hip hop oriented people I know from across the country, but if i had actually achieved a sample group representative of all of hip hop's listeners, we would have compiled a list that was the same as every other one. with that in mind, the unique results of this list, while they may offend your adamant stance on scientific integrity, are actually about as non-conformist as these kind of things get.

see you in greenpoint.
