Peter, Bjorn and John- Nothing to Worry About
I just realized that this bands title acronym is PB&J.
If I was Peter...or Bjorn...or John I guess, I would be haunted by 2005's critically acclaimed Young Folks. It was such a fun, catchy, generational yet timeless, and dare I say, perfect single, that even with a very respectable catalogue, I am consistently disappointed by the Swedish trio's post-Young Folks releases. Nothing to Worry About is no different. It's a good song, and has some very cool elements- the alternative percussion, the children singing (almost always works doesn't it?), and that little chinese piano that comes in at the end of the chorus- but it lacks continuity. Nevertheless, the minimalist production (a definitive sign of current Swedish pop) gives this track A LOT of remix potential (I'm going in on it next week).
This video is another story. Oh boy. The hair, the wardrobe, the gang mentality, the bikes, the dancing.....just watch it.
Asher Roth- College
I saw this yesterday on Ismelllikemoney.com. We all know the song, and if you expected, like me, that the video would be at a frat party, you were right. Predictability aside, it is a good video. Well shot, scantily clad girls, a few funny scenes. It looks like a fun party, and Asher seems like a cool dude.
The song is a bit more produced, which is mostly good, except for the censorship editing; it is annoying.
The Fleet Foxes- Mykonos
At their worst, the Fleet Foxes try a bit too hard, but their newest single Mykonos is a beautiful, intricate yet clean and forward song. The sound reminds me of the Byrds at their pinnacle (obviously Fifth Dimension) and the topic makes me think Donovan's Atlantis. The two bars of a cappella around 2:20 showcase the subtle harmony that runs through the whole song. The video is cool too.
