I Always Knew School was Bull

I knew it!  I have been preaching it for the past 12 years!  The education system in the United States is completely backwards, especially primary education!  I remember about 3 things from elementary school:

1) We learned about the Honi Na Shoni.  I don't remember anything about the Honi Na Shoni, just that they existed.
2) Suicide might be the best game ever.
3) School lunch is naaaaaaasty.

Public Education in los Estados Unidos took shape in the 19th century, with one of it's first proponents being Mr. Thomas Jefferson.  Mr. Jefferson advocated for a public education system that was separate from the parochial education that the majority of Americans (who were receiving an education) were receiving at the time.  In 1853, to my continued disdain,  New York became the second state to pass a compulsory attendance law.  In 2009, The Obama administrations American Reinvestment and Recovery Act placed 150 billion dollars at the disposal of public schools across the country.

Standardized public education fails for the same reason that standardized testing fails: it is based on a merit system not designed to incorporate the vast talents on the people it is applied to.  That, coupled with an underfunding of the arts, is a recipe for a one dimensional system of education.

That Dude said...

Funny thing is, it seems Arne Duncan, Sec of Ed. doesnt give a flying fuck about putting money into truly public education. The boy visited NYC for the first tiem last week and only made visits to charter schools. 98% of the cities kids go to non charter public schools. Hopefully Obama does not follow the Bushian trend of supporting charter schools to the detriment of truly equitable public education.
