Quick Hits: OJ, Boy George's Escort, and Sean Avery's Mouth

A few quick hits for you celebrity news junkies:

1. OJ Gets Sentenced: Orenthal James Simpson’s luck has finally run out. The Pro Football Hall of Famer, and arguably the best running back of all time, was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison for armed robbery and kidnapping in a failed attempt to recover sports memorabilia from two collectibles peddlers. He’ll be eligible for parole in six years, Judge Jackie Glass said. Simpson appeared for his sentencing in a blue prison jumpsuit, shackles and handcuffs. Weathered and dejected, Simpson apologized to the judge and the Las Vegas court after learning he won't be able to be freed on bail if he appeals. Holding back tears, he said, “I stand before you today sorry. I am apologetic to the people of Nevada. ... When I came here, I came here for a wedding. I didn't come to reclaim property… In no way did I mean to hurt anybody, to steal anything from anyone. I didn't want anybody else's stuff. I just wanted my own. I realize that I was stupid. I am sorry. I didn’t know that I was doing anything illegal. I thought I was retrieving property from friends. I’m sorry, I’m sorry for all of it." (Check out the video below)

2. Boy George Convicted of Beating Male Escort: Looks like a shitty day for oft-troubled celebrities. Former Culture Club singer Boy George (born George O'Dowd) was convicted by a London jury on Thursday of imprisoning a male escort in his apartment in 2007. No, that’s not a misprint. According to Sky News, prosecutors claimed that George restrained Norwegian escort Audun Carlsen, 29, with handcuffs in the singer's London apartment on April 28, 2007. Then, as Carlsen fled the apartment after a nude photo shoot, George beat him with a metal chain. George, 46, did not testify in the trial, but admitted to police that he handcuffed Carlsen to a bed while trying to investigate whether someone had tampered with one of his home computers. George said he believed that Carlsen had removed from the computer some photos George had taken of him during a previous meeting. Carlsen testified that during their April meeting, George called him into his bedroom, jumped on him, wrestled him to the ground and began beating him. He told the court that George dragged him across the floor toward a bed and shackled him to a hook drilled into the wall. The '80s pop star was released following the verdict and is due back in court for sentencing on January 16. The judge in the case indicated that jail was "the more likely option" for him. It's the latest setback for the flamboyant George, who has struggled with a serious heroin addiction and several drug-related arrests, including one in Manhattan in October 2005 in which police found cocaine in his apartment after he called them to report a burglary.

3. Avery Gets Suspended: Updating a story I reported yesterday, Dallas Stars forward Sean Avery has been suspended six games by the NHL for referring to his ex-girlfriends – now dating other NHL players – as “sloppy seconds.” Avery, who has twice led the NHL in penalty minutes and is second this season, also agreed to be evaluated for anger management. The league cited his "pattern of unacceptable and anti-social behavior." He’ll be eligible to return to the Stars on December 16th, but there’s some concern the team might not want him back. Rumors are swirling that Avery’s teammates are tired of his antics – they even refused to let the scrapper apologize to them – and his time in Dallas may come to an unceremonious end.
