So Jay Leno signed on with NBC to host a show at 10pm weeknights once his stint on the Tonight Show is over. But this is more meaningful than you think: In doing so, NBC eliminates 5 hours per week of primetime programming that they have to develop. So what?
Well for starters, this saves NBC a lot of money that they can use to improve their current roster of quality shows, including "The Office," "30 Rock," and "SNL." However, this is also symbolic: A major network television station indirectly acknowledging the impact of easily available new media. Not that the major networks have not taken steps to adapt before, but by changing their programming structure and cutting costs, this is a big a change as any has ever made.
The major networks stations find it hard to compete with the hundreds of cable television stations, the convenience of DVR, and the accessibility of Youtube and other sites like Hulu that broadcast TV shows on-demand. This is an important step in the development and restructuring of our media in that "the boob tube" is becoming less and less an outlet that controls our life, and more and more user friendly.
The proliferation of new media outlets is a good thing, as the more we use them, the more we can create change: as if you needed another reason to read Youwildin, there you have it.
