The cover of the most recent issue of the New Yorker has caused some wildin' in the media.
Defending the cover, penned by artist Barry Blitt, New Yorker editor David Remnick says that the controversial cover “satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama’s campaign… It is meant to bring things out into the open, to hold up a mirror to the absurd. And that's the spirit of this cover."
The question is, will the people get it? Will the 7,000 people that read the New Yorker comprehend the irony of the cover? Sure. In fact, among that minutia of the American populace, I'm sure this cover will be received as intended, perhaps even inducing the occasional pompous chuckle. However, this cover is now the hot topic of more widely circulated newspapers and blogs alike. The readers of the Daily News and NY Post may not see the irony in the image, which could result in a flood of bad publicity for the presumptive democratic nominee. I can't wait to see what Fox News does with this one.
Should the New Yorker's editorial staff have exercised better judgment, and not printed this cover? I say, kudos to them. Whether it was a lack of foresight or daring journalism, the result is wildin', and I'm feelin it.
